Seasonal Living - Spring Equinox rituals, recipes & celebrations

Updated: Mar 21

Spring carries a unique energy - it's a time of renewal, balance, and awakening.

Today, I'm excited to share with you the magic of Spring and how you can look after yourself and your wellbeing at this time.

I find so much joy in aligning with the seasons to foster a deeper connection with nature and myself.

The Spring Equinox: A Moment of Balance

The Spring Equinox on March 20th marks the start of astronomical Spring. It’s the point where day and night are of equal length, light and dark in perfect balance. From here, the days will continue to lengthen, bringing warmth, vitality, and growth.

This is a time of transition, as we shift from the quiet, reflective Yin energy of winter into the outward, expansive Yang energy of Spring and Summer. Just as nature is waking up, we are too. You may be feeling the stirrings of motivation, inspiration, and new beginnings.

Embracing Seasonal Living

Each season offers its own rhythm, energy, and lessons, guiding us to live in tune with nature’s cycles.

Spring is a season of rebirth—a time to shake off the slowness of winter, embrace movement, and step into fresh possibilities.

The Seasonal Wheel of the Year provides moments for pause and celebration, and the Spring Equinox is our invitation to plant seeds—both literally and metaphorically—for what we wish to grow in the months ahead.

6 Quick Ways to Celebrate the Spring Equinox

Want to honour the changing season? Here are some simple ways to mark the occasion:

☀️ Watch the sunrise and set an intention for the season ahead

🌱 Plant seeds—both literal (herbs, flowers, or veggies) and metaphorical (new habits or ideas)

🔥 Light a candle to honour the balance of light and dark.

🌿 Cleanse your space with sage, rosemary, or incense to welcome fresh energy.

💧 Have a seasonal feast—cook with fresh, vibrant, and locally sourced ingredients.

📖 Reflect or journal about what you’re leaving behind and what you’re welcoming in.

10 Ways to Align with Spring and Boost Your Wellbeing

1. Refresh Your Space

  • Spring Cleaning: declutter, throw open your windows, and let fresh air in.

  • Brighten Your Home: Bring in fresh flowers, plants, and lighter fabrics to reflect the change in season.

  • Aromatherapy for Spring: Use uplifting scents like lemon, bergamot, eucalyptus, peppermint, and rosemary in diffusers or sprays.

2. Nourish Your Body with Seasonal Foods

  • Eat fresh and vibrant foods: Spring greens, asparagus, peas, radishes, strawberries, and citrus fruits are in season now.

  • In Traditional Chinese Medicine spring is about supporting your liver and gallbladder, and helping your body get rid of toxins from winter, so eating and making teas and tonics with bitter greens like dandelion, rocket, wild garlic, nettle, mint, chicory and garlic mustard can all help this process.

  • Lighten your meals: Swap heavy winter dishes for fresher salads, stir-fries, and lighter soups.

3. Wake Up Your Senses

  • Sunlight & Fresh Air: Spend time outdoors in the morning to help regulate your energy levels.

  • Essential Oils for Energy: Try citrus oils like lemon, grapefruit and orange for an instant lift.

  • Hydrate: Increase your water intake to support your body’s natural detox processes.

4. Reconnect with Nature

  • Go for a sunrise or sunset walk to witness the changing light.

  • Look out for signs of Spring: Blossom, birdsong, and new growth everywhere.

  • Ground yourself: Walk barefoot on grass when the weather allows.

5. Move Your Body with the Season

  • Gentle, energising movement: Yoga, pilates, dance, or stretching to wake up the body.

  • Outdoor activities: Hikes, cycling or walking in the fresh air.

  • Listen to your energy levels: Move when it feels good, rest when needed.

6. Spring Skincare & Self-Care Rituals

  • Lighter skincare: Swap rich winter moisturisers for hydrating serums and facial mists.

  • Exfoliate and refresh: A gentle body scrub can help smoothe away winter dryness.

  • Herbal baths: Try a bath with Epsom salts, rosemary, and citrus oils for an uplifting soak.

7. Journal & Set Intentions for the Season

  • Spring is a time of new beginnings. Take time to reflect on what you want to create, change, or nurture.

  • Journal prompts to explore:

    • What am I ready to bring to life this season?

    • Where do I feel a sense of renewal in my life?

    • What old patterns am I ready to let go of?

    • How can I embrace more joy and spontaneity?

    • What new beginnings am I embracing this season?

    • Where do I feel the most energy and excitement in my life right now?

    • What's feeling challenging?

    • What feelings or emotions are trying to get my attention that I'm ignoring or suppressing?

    • What seeds of intention do I want to plant for the coming months?

    • What can I do to invite more lightness and joy into my days?

    • How can I bring more balance into my life as the seasons change?

8. Tap Into Creativity & Play

  • Spring is a great time for creative projects! Try painting, writing, or gardening.

  • Experiment with something new: A dance class, a new recipe, or a fresh approach to your daily routine.

  • Bring more joy into your days: Make time for laughter, music, and movement.

9. Strengthen Your Social Connections

  • Spring is a social season: Plan picnics, brunches, or casual gatherings with friends.

  • Reconnect: If winter felt isolating, now’s the time to reach out and nurture relationships.

  • Celebrate together: The Spring Equinox is a great time for shared rituals, from meals to simple walks in nature.

10. Honour Rest & Balance

  • Listen to your body’s natural rhythms: You don’t have to rush into productivity—growth happens steadily.

Make space for daydreaming, relaxation, and redefine self care

Spring in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Spring is associated with the Wood element, representing growth, movement, and renewal. Just as trees and plants push upward toward the sky, our energy begins to rise, encouraging expansion and action.

Organs Associated with Spring: The Liver and Gallbladder

  • The Liver (Yin organ) is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body. It governs detoxification, emotional balance, and vision—both physically and metaphorically.

  • The Gallbladder (Yang organ) helps with decision-making and courage, supporting us in moving forward and taking action.

Signs of a Balanced Liver & Gallbladder in Spring:

✅ Feeling motivated, inspired, and emotionally balanced

✅ Clear vision and purpose

✅ Good digestion and circulation

✅ Healthy, flexible muscles and joints

Signs of Imbalance in Spring (Liver Qi Stagnation):

❌ Irritability, frustration, or mood swings

❌ Feeling stuck or indecisive

❌ Digestive discomfort, bloating, or sluggishness

❌ Stiffness in the body, headaches, or eye strain

How to Support Your Liver & Gallbladder in Spring

🌿 Eat Liver-Supporting Foods:

  • Bitter greens (dandelion, rocket, chicory, mustard greens)

  • Sour foods (lemon, lime, apple cider vinegar)

  • Fresh herbs (coriander, parsley, mint)

  • Sprouts, asparagus, broccoli, and leafy greens

  • Green tea and nettle tea for detox support

💨 Move & Stretch to Support Liver Qi Flow:

  • Gentle movement like yoga, qigong, tai chi, or walking helps prevent stagnation

  • Focus on twisting yoga poses to support liver detoxification

  • Get outside! Fresh air and sunlight nourish the Liver and Gallbladder meridians

💛 Emotional & Mental Detox Practices:

  • Express emotions in healthy ways—journal, talk, or create art

  • Practice forgiveness, acceptance and letting go to prevent resentment from stagnating

  • Engage in activities that inspire creativity and new perspectives

💧 Spring Cleansing & Detox Rituals:

  • Start the day with warm lemon water to gently support liver detox

  • Try a short juice cleanse or a plant-based reset to lighten digestion

  • Dry brushing and epsom salt baths can support lymphatic flow

Embracing the Spring Season

Spring invites us to wake up, move forward, and embrace new possibilities. But just like in nature, balance is key—too much force or speed can lead to frustration, while too little movement can make us feel stuck.

By tuning into our emotions, energy, and body signals, we can adjust as needed and move through this season with more ease, joy, and alignment.
